KENTUCKY HOME: New Recipe. Same Tradition.

As the Kentucky Derby approaches, and sports fans around the world turn their attention to the most exciting 2 minutes in sports, it seems a good time to reflect on what makes Kentucky the great state we all know it to be.

We have rolling hills, bluegrass, and diverse wildlife. We have college basketball. We have bourbon. And of course, we have a great tradition of horse racing. With horse racing, comes the Commonwealth’s favorite cocktail, at least, on the second Saturday of May.

The Mint Julep is one of the state’s most delicious traditions. Kentucky Home is our homage to the Mint Julep, and this is our 3rd year making this cocktail-inspired beer. This year, we have made a couple tweaks to the recipe that we hope will make it even more faithful to the original flavors of the beverage.

First, we have increased the aging time in bourbon barrels in order to get a more well-rounded, deep bourbon character. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, we have increased the ABV of this beer considerably, from ~6% last year to 9.5% this year. We felt that beefing this base beer up would allow it to stand up to the strong notes of bourbon, oak, and mint without being completely overpowered.

Here at the brewery, we are all very happy with how this beer has turned out, and believe it is our best rendition yet! We hope you feel the same way too. Let’s lift one to the traditions that make The Commonwealth uncommon.
