Braxton Labs Beer Science Fair: Firkin Profile: Zac Boehnke

Beer Science Fair is an event to celebrate creativity, innovation, and individualism within the craft brewing industry. 9 of our brewers have put their noses to the grindstone to come up with firkins for testing and judging by YOU at Beer Science Fair on September 29th at Braxton Labs.

We’re very excited about the beers that our brewers have been working on, and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you! We’re continuing our brewer profile blog series by highlighting the one and only Zac Boehnke. Zac is responsible for quite a few of the incredible beers to come out of Braxton Labs as of late. Here’s what Zac’s up to for Beer Science Fair!

What’s your role at Braxton?
Lead Innovation Brewer

Can you describe your beer/firkin?
Braxton Labs NE IPA: El Dorado, Citra dry hopped with locally grown Chinook hops, plus an infusion of orange zest and vanilla beans.

What inspired you to create this beer for the Science Fair?
At Labs we have been experimenting a lot with the hazy IPA craze, as well as using some local ingredients. I thought I would combine the two, so I’ve been in talks with Christopher from the Dayton, KY community garden to harvest some fresh chinook hops picked two days before the event. The orange zest and vanilla will hopefully balance some of the pine/earthiness from the ultra fresh hops.

Why are you excited about your firkin?
I’m excited to do something new with one of my favorite beers we have on at Labs right now. On top of that, I love the fact that we can showcase Dayton, KY and the work these people are doing to better their community.

What’s been your favorite Braxton beer/Braxton Labs beer this year and why?

Braxton: 1957 is always a favorite of mine. As a Reds fan, I love the back story and the beer itself is so flavorful for a low ABV easy drinker.
Braxton Labs: Strawberry Gose from this summer or the Blueberry Strudel Berliner that is on tap right now. We’ve really had a fun time with the kettle sours this year!

Why do you think your firkin will win the blue ribbon?
I think the local, fresh hops will pull people in and the orange creamsicle profile will win them over!

We’re thrilled for the Braxton Labs Beer Science Fair to make its return in 2018. Seeing our brewers craft these remarkably unique beers makes us proud to work alongside such creative and inspired folks.
