Braxton Labs Beer Science Fair: Firkin Profile: Ryan Dickmann

Beer Science Fair is an event to celebrate creativity, innovation, and individualism within the craft brewing industry. 9 of our brewers have put their noses to the grindstone to come up with firkins for testing and judging by YOU at Beer Science Fair on September 29th at Braxton Labs.

We’re very excited about the beers that our brewers have been working on, and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you! Our second brewer from Braxton that will be submitting a firkin to Beer Science Fair is Ryan Dickmann. Ryan is our Quality Control/Assurance Specialist. He’s responsible for ensuring we’re aware of any inconsistency in our product, and are armed with enough data to inform our decisions to rectify any inconsistencies. In short – He’s a quality dude. We asked Ryan some questions about his firkin submission. Read more below!

Brad, What’s your role at Braxton?
Quality Assurance/Quality Control. I do the day to day laboratory work that makes sure we’re always on our game!

Can you describe your beer/firkin?
Our Ohio Grown Pale Ale from Braxton Labs, but flavored with black ants and a touch of lemongrass. Honey will be added for flavor and to top off the carbonation.

Ants? As in, insects? What inspired you to create this beer for the Science Fair?
My firkin this year was inspired by my time in college collecting, researching, studying, and even eating insects. Ants have a surprising sharp citrus flavor from the formic acid that they produce in their venom, and I’m going to extract this flavor to give the beer an interesting twist.

Why are you excited about your firkin?
This beer is a tribute to the animal order Hymenoptera – a highly diverse group of insects that includes bees, wasps, and ants. I’m also just excited to experiment with a raw ingredient that most don’t consider.

What’s been your favorite Braxton beer/Braxton Labs beer this year and why?
My favorite Braxton beer this year was our collaboration with Sweetwater Brewing Company called Moving to the Country. It was a delicious and drinkable pale ale with an awesome peachy flavor. My favorite Labs beer was the Single Hope Pale Ale with Grungeist. It was a delicious drinkable pale ale with an awesome tropical fruit flavor. I guess my preferences are a little more one-dimensional than I thought…

Why do you think your firkin will win the blue ribbon?
I don’t think I’m going to win, but that’s fine. I’m just trying to have fun with it. I think that Bird is going to win again because a mint and orange Haven sounds awesome!

We’re thrilled for the Braxton Labs Beer Science Fair to make its return in 2018. Seeing our brewers craft these remarkably unique beers makes us proud to work alongside such creative and inspired folks.

Beer Science Fair takes place on September 29th at Braxton Labs.
